How it works

What do you actually know?

A contact is a report from a sensor. It can be incomplete, old or lost.

Detection is not full identification

Range, signature, obstruction and the receiver’s condition shape a contact. A distant return can be little more than an estimated size and location. Closer, better observations reveal more of the ship.

Searching costs something

Distress broadcasts are easier to find than faint ships or mines. Long-range work takes time and a stable platform; an active search needs power. Lost contact leaves an aging last fix, not a live view of an unseen enemy.
